Day 23. Watchdog media missing as time ticks away.

A little "teaser" today for a bigger post planned tomorrow, examining local press coverage (rather, the lack of it) of this Hinson fiasco.

A little off topic perhaps, but given my last post, wondering why the voters didn't know about Judge Hinson's numerous on going violations when they overwhelmingly elected him for another term in office this past November, I hinted last time that the local media might bear some of the blame. No one was keeping watch, to inform the populace about Judge Hinson. (To be sure, the powers that be, mostly the Commission on Judicial Conduct, and its members bear most of the blame for not acting earlier and for keeping this secret.) If it weren't for Peter Busch at Phoenix based KPHO TV, none of this would have made front page news. (And to reiterate, they're Phoenix based. They don't have local reporters in Prescott covering the local news there.)

Again, maybe off topic for this blog, but it seems Providential.

See, I generally have an idea early in the morning about what I'm going to write about for each day's Countdown. This morning I knew I was going to write this teaser about the Press. So wasn't I surprised to hear Terry Gilberg on the radio this afternoon, as she substituted today for J.D. Hayworth, rehearse and reaffirm everything I was going to say about the function of the Press in our country.

Terry, a double degreed professional Journalist, speaking about the media as the '4th Estate' said, Our job in the media is to keep a "watchdog"—an eyeball—on government. That's our NUMBER ONE charge. (The long link is the audio.)

So isn't it interesting that when someone tried running an ad soliciting information on Judge Hinson in the Camp Verde Bugle—potentially hinting at a huge story brewing—the response, twice, from headquarters at the Verde Valley News was The publisher chooses not to accept this ad at this time.

Wow, Pam. You coulda had a scoop.
